Social contribution that only Nippon Steel can make

Nippon Steel has steelmaking plants and manufacturing plants throughout Japan. We have a long history of smoothly operating these plants while coexisting with the local community.
Our philosophy of “coexistence with the local community” still remains and we carry out music support activities through the Nippon Steel Arts Foundation which is based at Kioi Hall, manage sports teams to foster a spirit of unity with the local community, participate in and co-sponsor local events, and make our welfare facilities available to the local citizens.

Hands-on experience with the tatara iron making method

Children throughout Japan take up the challenge of making iron with the tatara method.
Tatara iron-making is the method that was used to make iron in Japan in ancient times. Iron sand is used as the raw material, and iron is made by burning charcoal using an air blowing device called a “bellows.”
We also hold inspection tours of our steel-making plants as well as study sessions. In addition, we hold tatara iron-making events throughout Japan to enable people to experience the joy of making something while comparing this method with the modern method of making steel, and also to have people acquire an interest in science and technology.

The Japan-Australia bond formed by Nippon Steel Australia and the Oita Works

Nippon Steel Australia and the Oita Works have supported a collaboration based on a sister relationship between Wickham Primary School in Point Samson, Western Australia, where iron ore mining is carried out, and the Akenonishi Primary School in Oita City.
In 2006 and 2007, pupils from both schools visited each other’s schools in order to deepen their mutual friendship. We also donated a television conference system to Akenonishi Primary School, and at present both schools are carrying out exchange lessons using this system.

Music

Nippon Steel’s music mecenat activities contribute to further development of music culture.

Since its establishment, Nippon Steel has continuously supported the arts.

In 1990, as part of the celebration of our 20th anniversary in business, we commenced construction of the Kioi Hall as a center for musical activities, and opened it on April 1995.
The Nippon Steel Arts Foundation was established as the parent organization for running this hall which is aimed at contributing to further development of music, through the nurturing of artists in the field of music, the holding of performances, and the provision of support for excellent musical activities.
Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo, a resident orchestra, is acclaimed for its high level of ability. In 2003, it received an invitation to participate in the Dresden Music Festival 2005 where it gave four performances and gained an enthusiastic following among European audiences.

Sports

Sports teams that are intimately connected with the local community

Nippon Steel nurtures competitors from the local community who participate in world events such as the Olympics, and is engaged in sporting activities for further raising the level of Japanese sports.
Nippon Steel, who has steelmaking plants throughout Japan, actively supports club teams and junior sports teams centered on volleyball, rugby, baseball, and judo, and also make available its athletic facilities to the local community.
